Facebook Testing “Profile Tags”

August 20, 2015

Much like LinkedIn’s endorsement’s section, Facebook is testing the ability for users to be tagged by friends with different traits on their profile.

The feature, currently being tested in New Zealand, is called “Profile Tags.” A Facebook spokesperson said, “Created by a small team as part of a Facebook hackathon, profile tags are a creative tool that lets you and your friends add tags to your profile to highlight the things that describe you and what you’re into. You can control what tags are shown on your own profile.”

While LinkedIn’s endorsements usually focus on skills a person has, Facebook’s “Profile Tags” deal more with personality.

In order for these tags to become visible on a profile, users have the ability to approve or deny the tags, much like the ability to approve or deny friends on Facebook. In order to organize the tags, the most “liked” tags will appear first on someone’s list of “Profile Tags”.

Facebook is currently testing the tool in New Zealand in order to see how the tool would fit in a larger market. Although LinkedIn endorsements are popular, it is unknown whether Facebook “Profile Tags” will be and whether the tool will become a permanent part of the social network.
