As a college student majoring in Public Relations and Journalism, it’s always nice for me to see the two worlds become integrated. Once I heard about Facebook’s Instant Articles available for iPhones, I saw my world as a social media intern and my world as a college journalist combined.
Instant Articles have allowed Facebook to partner with nine different news organizations in order to make news more accessible to Facebook mobile users. The nine organizations include The New York Times, National Geographic, Buzzfeed, TheGuardian, NBC News, The Atlantic, BBC News, Spiegel Online and Bild.
Available to mobile users since May, Facebook describes their Instant Articles as, “loading instantly as much as 10 times faster than the standard mobile web.” As a millennial who has grown up with every piece of news available on my phone instantly, that fast load speed alone was enough to get me hooked.
Besides the quick load speeds, the app also includes high resolution photos and videos. Facebook is telling potential publishers that they still have control over the content they post, but the social network site will provide the experience of photos and videos as well as interactive maps to their users.
As the world is becoming increasingly mobile and content continues to drive storytelling both on and offline, it’s important for news organizations to utilize the social networking sites available to them to tell news stories. With Facebook’s sharing option of stories and viral content, the partnership of Instant Articles is convenient for all markets and audiences. The new publishing tool will help bring content closer to mobile users fingertips.
With the increasing popularity of all social media sites, the addition of integrated news content on Facebook is hopefully going to help create new traffic for the organizations utilizing Instant Articles.
Whether you’re like me and you shamelessly love to read stories about pizza and puppies on Buzzfeed, or about politics from The New York Times, by integrating social media and journalistic content, Instant Articles has something to offer everyone.
