What You Need to Know About Mobilegeddon

April 21, 2015

Mobilegeddon is upon us. Today Google changed the search results algorithm for mobile users to more successfully satisfy mobile web users. The change also now rewards companies for having mobile-friendly websites. Here are 5 things to know about Mobilegeddon from USA TODAY to better prepare your business and your website for the mobile take-over.

  1. Websites that are mobile-friendly are rewarded with a higher up position in search results, while sites that are not mobile-friendly – take too long to load, have small text, large graphics, difficult navigation – will now be at the bottom of Google’s search results.
  2. Google changed the algorithm today, but it will take up to a week for this change to come into effect for mobile users.
  3. The reason for this change and the mobile push is because, according to Forrester Research, only 38% of business websites are considered mobile-friendly, and 86% of U.S. smartphone users use Google to search.
  4. You can find out if your website is mobile-friendly with Google’s test here and learn more about the change.
  5. If your website doesn’t pass the test, check in with your web developer, web host or online consulting services to make sure that your business is optimized for mobile use.
